Händel and Vivaldi

Concerto Copenhagen played its first concert in 1991. Appreciated and praised by critics and audiences alike, today the ensemble performs staple baroque repertoire as well as lesser-known Scandinavian music. Over the years Concerto Copenhagen has collaborated with many internationally renowned artists, including Emma Kirkby, Andreas Scholl, Anne Sofie von Otter, Sonia Prina, Vivica Genaux, Andrew Manze, Jordi Savall and Alfredo Bernardini to name but a few. The Orchestra toured in the USA, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and China.

In 1999, the internationally acclaimed harpsichordist, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, became the ensemble’s chief artistic director. Mortensen gives concerts, teaches and leads master classes in Europe, North and South America, Japan, Australia, i.e. at the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Julliard School of Music in New York. In 2004, he became the musical director of the European Union Baroque Orchestra (EUBO). Additionally, Mortensen is working with Irish Baroque Orchestra, Holland Baroque, Nederlandse Bachvereniging and Collegium 1704 among others.

Violinist Fredrik From studied in Gothenburg and London. He was and is a concertmaster of several ensembles – Concerto Copenhagen, Gothenburg Baroque and Orkiestra Kore. From also plays with Drottningholm Theatre Orchestra (Sweden), Les Ambassadeurs and Ensemble Cordia.

Concerto Copenhagen has designed its programme around water. In baroque times Water Music enjoyed great popularity. Noblemen favoured sailing, which had to be accompanied by music: royal ship customary was followed by a barge carrying orchestra. Händel’s suite nicely matches Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto Storm at Sea and Telemann’s Water Music, written to celebrate the centenary of the Admiralty in Hamburg.

Concert organised in collaboration with the Danish Cultural Institute, Royal Danish Embassy.
